Interest Rate Flusters

June 18, 2008

My partner and I brought our first place last year. A small apartment near the city. Since we brought there have been countless interest rate rises in Australia which is making life more and more difficult. We both earn ok money so are doing our best to put as much extra cash into the mortgage as possible but saving for a wedding at the same time and trying to at least have some kind of life is becoming very hard. I guess its a test to see what we can handle, and better to go through it before we get married rather than after I’m sure is the best idea. Sometimes I wander whether it was worth buying in the first place. Sure the benefits in the long term will pay off but the sacrifice in quality of live while we are healthy and in the prime of our lives seems such a shame. I’m not sure it will be long before we become a rental country like in much of Scandinavia. I know its a shame for them, but they are happy, earn good money, enjoy their lives and have a good quality living, and thats nothing to argue about.
